WhatsApp will charge for service messages from October 1, 2026

Meta's announcement verified on September 9, 2026 · rates verified on September 8, 2026
A reply goes from $0 to $0.0034 per message in North America

And to $0.0220 in the United Kingdom, $0.0014 in India, $0.0085 in Mexico, $0.0068 in Brazil, $0.0550 in Germany: the utility rate each market already has, now applied to every message you send inside the 24-hour customer service window.

Until September 30, 2026 replying stays free, with no cap. Nothing changes today: it changes on October 1.

What Meta announced, verbatim

Since November 2024, service messages (the ones you send a customer within 24 hours of their last message) have not been charged in any market. That ends on October 1, 2026. These are the three sentences that matter from Meta's non-template message pricing page, quoted as written so you do not have to rely on our summary:

In plain terms: every message you send as a reply is billed per unit, at the price utility and authentication messages have today in the recipient's market. And utility templates that were free when sent inside the window are billed too.

What changes and what does not

The "1,000 free messages per month": providers say it, Meta does not

Several platforms (Whaticket, SleekFlow, YCloud, PickyAssist, among others) publish that from October 1 each phone number will get 1,000 free service messages per month, non-cumulative, with billing starting at message 1,001. As of September 9, 2026 that allowance does not appear in Meta's public documentation. It may well be true (providers get notices before the public), which is why the scenario appears below, but until Meta publishes it, treat it as "according to providers" and do not budget with it. This page will be updated the day Meta confirms or denies it.

What a reply will cost in each market

The "from Oct 1" column is each market's utility rate, which is what Meta says it will charge per service message. The last column is what a business sending 1,000 reply messages a month would pay if no free allowance existed. Cheapest first. The market is set by the recipient's phone number, not by where your company is.

USD per delivered message, pulled from Meta's official pricing calculator on September 8, 2026. Meta also announced rate adjustments for October 1 in Bangladesh, Iraq, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman and Ukraine, which today sit inside regional markets; they will be added when they appear in the official rate card. Latin American markets are highlighted because the rest of this site is built for them.

The gap between markets is huge: a reply in Germany ($0.0550) will cost 69 times a reply in Colombia ($0.0008). The full rate card, with marketing and authentication too, is in the pricing dataset for all 38 markets (CSV and JSON, CC BY 4.0).

What it means for a business that only replies

The most common case among small businesses: no campaigns, they just answer what customers send. Today their Meta bill is $0. With 1,500 reply messages a month, from October 1 it becomes:

These are small numbers next to any platform subscription. For most small businesses the change does not alter which platform is worth paying for: that is still decided by the subscription and the seats included. What does change is that the Meta bill stops being zero, and a business with a large support volume (a big e-commerce store, an appointment center) has to start counting reply messages, which until now it did not need to do.

What to do before October 1

Frequently asked questions

When does WhatsApp start charging for service messages?

On October 1, 2026. Meta announced it in its official pricing documentation: service messages, which have not been charged since November 2024, will be billed per delivered message at the same rate as utility and authentication messages. Until September 30, 2026 replying inside the 24-hour window remains free.

How much will a WhatsApp reply cost from October 2026?

The utility rate of the recipient's market: $0.0034 in North America, $0.0220 in the United Kingdom, $0.0014 in India, $0.0085 in Mexico, $0.0068 in Brazil and $0.0550 in Germany, per delivered message. With 1,000 replies a month that is $3.40 in North America and $1.40 in India.

Are there really 1,000 free service messages per month?

Several providers (Whaticket, SleekFlow, YCloud, PickyAssist) publish it: 1,000 free service messages per phone number per month, non-cumulative. As of September 9, 2026 that allowance does not appear in Meta's public documentation. Until Meta publishes it, treat it as unconfirmed and do not budget with it.

Does the price of marketing messages change too?

No. Marketing messages were always billed, inside or outside the 24-hour window, and stay the same: $0.0250 in North America, $0.0635 in the UK, $0.0118 in India, per delivered message. What changes is that service stops costing zero and utility templates are billed inside the window as well.
